Let me share a few fun facts with you today.
1. Did you know our body runs in approx. 5 litres of blood?
That’s right. We are the proud owners of 5 litres of blood on average and it’s the way our body works. There are many vital things in the human body that will keep it working properly, such as sugar and oxygen. But without blood, these vital substances wouldn’t be able to get anywhere. Blood runs through a pipe system called circulatory or vascular system. It’s formed by two kind of pipes: arteries and veins. Arteries are the ones who take the blood from the heart to the body, and veins are the ones who take the blood from all body corners back to the heart to be pumped again. Basically, 5 litres of life flowing through your entire body every second.
2. Did you know that our largest organ is the skin?
Yes, the skin is an organ. And yes, is the largest one we’ve got! It accounts for approximately 12-16% of your body weight – between 3 to 5 kgs on average. And if taken off and spread out, the skin would measure around 2 squared meters. It is a vital organ for all the functions it has. The skin serves not only for protection against external agents. Some of its other functions are these:
- Heat regulation
- Excretion (sweat)
- Production of Vitamin D that will help strengthen the bones
- Protection against infectious agents
3. Did you know that your heart pumps around 100,000 times in one day?
The heart never stops to amaze me. It takes approx. 20 seconds for blood to go through your entire body after the heart makes one pump. Basically, the heart is life…movement is life! This organ is such a hard worker since minute cero. It never ever stops…if it does then we’d be dead. Even more awesome? You can exercise and train your heart so it can perform better through time. The more you stimulate it, the better your entire body will function because of all the connections and the way our body works.
4. Did you know that you breathe around 16 times per minute?
Oh the lungs! We have two lungs which are located in our chest and somehow surrounding the heart. The lungs are incredible filters and oxygenators keeping us alive along with the heart. The lungs are amazingly fluffy structures constantly cleaning the air we inhale through chemical and physiological processes with every breathe. They can inflate and deflate in ways you can’t even imagine – like this video! Just wow.
5. Do you know what’s the smallest bone in your body?
It’s called Stirrup, it’s 2,8mm long and it’s located inside your ear. The inner ear has 3 main bones that allow vibrations to resonate and produce sounds. Amazing as it seem, these little structures really change the way we experience the world, just like all other senses.
6. Did you know that every person’s fingerprints are unique in the entire human history?
This is a fact. Every person’s fingerprints are absolutely unique. There are not two alike. In very rare cases people can born without them, or in case of certain injuries such as skin burns, fingerprints can be affected. And because they are so unique is why they’re used in our identity cards, security systems or passports.
Isn’t it the human body an amazing machine?
Can you imagine being able to make it last long and painless through the most of your life? Yes we can. Let’s take better care of this little temple we live in, seriously.
To good health! Dr. Mariana
