I’ve been trying to sit down and write for what will be my first book out there. I’ve decided a 2018 deadline and a 6-month plan that will help me accomplish it. It’s exciting and oh so scary too! But I know this is the time to do it and I’m happy to embrace the fear.

After all, fear is the greatest fuel in our lives at the most crucial points.

Because of fear of how we see ourselves in the future is that we decide to make changes and reassess how we’re living life. It’s simple when said but clearly not easy when it comes to action – yet not impossible either!

You see, I’m a doctor, right? It’s been wonderful to become a better one within time and practice. But I’m also other things that I love and enjoy. I’m a writer, a traveller and a pole dancer. I enjoy spending time on airplanes and trains, writing and letting myself be hypnotised by the “clack clack” of the railway or the endless buzzing of turbines as I stare through the window into the horizon.

I love being the foreigner who must observe to learn and adjust. I’ve done it several times, even when back in my home country every time! The sense of amazement that we get just by being curious is so fulfilling and enriching, just like when we were kids. The world appears to be all marvellous, surprising and exciting. I’ve come to analyse how we’ve come to lose that sense of wonder as we grow up. Yes, it’s real. The burdens of a social system makes us so worried and caught up in obligations that we forget to enjoy the free time and the time for ourselves alone.

Might it be another consequence of fear? Stress itself, that is. 

How needed it is to remind ourselves in some regular basis of the self care minutes we owe to our mind and body every day. Oh, but you have kids, or work two jobs, or commute three hours every day and self care is lost from your life’s dictionary? No no, think again. You can practice any kind of self care even within a few minutes every day. That’s what all this mindfulness thing is all about. Being mindful of your shower time or your food time, as short as five minutes, it’s possible to make sure you feel recharged after such short five minutes. Yes. Think about it.

Stress grows so deep inside us these days because of all those obligations, payments, material needs, that we forget how to take care of our mind, and guess what? That’s where disease begins. Dis-ease. Rings a bell?

Without a proper control of our daily mindset, we can certainly go into wrecking mode eventually, not even far from now if we ignore the signs enough. That’s how scary it is…

Even as a doctor myself, I suffer from burnout, depression and all consequences of stress.

Like that one time when I suddenly developed an ear buzz that after two years is still there. Considerably lower but still present. I’ve decided to make it my “You’re too stressed! Personal Alarm“. Each time I notice my ear buzz too high when going to bed, I know I need to slow down my mind, do a few minutes of breathing and meditation (I enjoy it and works for me) or if I’m not in the mood for staying still, then I do 10 minutes of stretching or dancing.

Yes, I dance like I never thought I would and yet, a year and a half ago I managed to begin those dance lessons I had been wanting for a while: pole dance! Here’s a personal truth to be shared: I’ve never been a sports person. There! I said it. I’ve always struggled with the “being fit” side of life even when I wanted and tried repeatedly. I just couldn’t stick to anything. Then I found pole dance and I’ve never looked back.

Not only my strength has grown in amazing ways but also my confidence, my enjoyability of life, new friends, a powerful sense of community, of self worth, of pleasure – a simple and huge sense of loving my life and myself.

A night where I go to my pole sport class is a night where I’ll come with the biggest grin on the face, good appetite for healthy food and a secured good night sleep. Movement is magic, no matter your circumstance. Whether it’s dancing, stretching at home, an hour or 10 minutes, it all counts and it’s important that we acknowledge every little bit.

Is at this time that my soul calls for more writing, more dancing and more outdoors. It all feeds my soul, fills my energy tanks and my happiness levels. And just because we want it, doesn’t mean we’ll be automatically prone to do it every single time. Takes discipline and most importantly: a promise to yourself. To me is writing and pole dancing these days what fuels me, calms me and makes me go back on my own lane every time, completely energised, positive and empowered. Feelings I certainly want to have more of in life.

What is your soul calling for these days?

Listen to it and give it some of that. You’ll feel refreshed and reseted in no time. But you need to make it a promise. To care for yourself, to feed your mind and body, and to stay accountable. Otherwise it’ll be also easy to loose track. Not to be disheartened, just jump back on the train the soonest possible.
