«BLOOD! OMG, I’m about to faint…»

Wait! Before you do, don’t panic and read this.

Who hasn’t felt the rusty blade of a surface or random object on the street…right into our feet?

Yes, bleeding is scary and it can have a wide range of reactions among people. But fear no more. Bleeding can be many things indeed. But it’s super important that you know how to react in case of a bleeding wounds.


6 Easy Steps When Dealing with Bleeding Wounds


1. Don’t Panic

And if possible, find some latex gloves.

If not, just protect yourself as much as possible when getting in touch with other person’s blood.

2. Call an Ambulance or go to an Emergency Room

Bleeding requires medical attention. ALWAYS. So don’t doubt on asking for help whenever there’s blood involved.

After calling for help, follow these next steps to help control the bleeding.

3. Put Pressure on the Wound No Matter What

Grab a towel or any piece of fabric/clothing/gauze in order to put on the damaged skin.

Hold pressure at least for five minutes.

Pressure should be just decent and not too strong to break bones.

Pressure will help in the clotting process, making the bleeding stop after a few minutes.

If there’s an object inserted in the skin, NEVER remove it. This will make bleeding worsen up.

If the wound is on arms/legs, apply a tourniquet a few cms above it in order to cut blood supply.

4. Don’t Wash the Wound

Except if it’s a bite. Just in case there’s some poison in it.

Thorough cleaning will be performed later by health staff after checking that there are no other injuries involved. It’s best to leave wound just as it happened.

5. Wrap It Up

After 5-10 minutes of putting pressure on the wound, the bleeding must be controlled.

Proceed then to cover with some more fabric or clothing healthcare until proper attention is given.

If possible, find some ice and apply it over the wrapped wound. This will help to avoid larger inflammation on the area.

6. Find the Ideal Position According to Wound’s Location

There are different ways to react depending on the wound’s location:

Nose Bleeding: Sit down and lean head back on a surface. A bit of pressure on the nose’s bridge between the eyes is useful too.

Ear Bleeding: cover with fabric or gauze and put pressure.

Arms and Legs: Same initial steps and elevate limbs. This will make the bleeding diminish faster due to gravity effect.

Teeth: grab a piece of fabric/gauze and chew it hard.

Mouth/Tongue: wrap the tongue and press it hard.

Thorax/Chest: wrap up thoroughly and remain seated for proper breathing. Lungs could be hurt and collapsed. Breath slowly. Deep breathing can be hurtful.

Abdominal Bleeding: Lay down completely, grab fabric or towel and put soft pressure.

If organs seem to slip out (be strong!), warm up the towel and if possible, put some salt on it. The place the salted warm towel on top of the wound and viscera. Give lots of liquids in the mouth to the wounded person. Hydration is basic.


Because curiosity should be our compass as we travel, no matter how exposed to the world we can become as we ramble around. That’s why the smartest thing to do is learn and prevent before events happen.
